DIY Is the Way to Do It...

Over at DoItYourself, there are some really creative tips on getting organized with items you find at flea markets, thrift stores, and garage sales...a neat way to be green and reuse some interesting items. Some examples include:
Design a Birdcage Mail Holder:

Get yourself sorted with a cagey mail center. Scrub the framework of the birdcage with a bleach solution. Then clip off the wires from the front and back, leaving a few to create mail slots.

To make shelves, cut dowel rods slightly longer than the cage width and notch the wood to help it grab the wires. Cut glass or plexiglass shelves to fit, and place them on the dowel rods.

Next is Fill Vintage Suitcases:Stack vintage suitcases in towers to create mini closets for stashing things. Strip, clean, and decoupage the insides. Replace broken handles with belts or ribbons.

There are more storage and organizational ideas that warrant checking out as well! They even have really cool ideas for Wall Art.

Another Great Vintage Find - Mikasa Dish Set

As I browsed a quaint secondhand shop, I spotted this majestic vintage Mikasa dish set and said "you WILL be MINE!" It came in a dusty cardboard box with the dishes neatly stacked inside. The set was complete with 8 plates, bowls, saucers & cups, 4 salad plates, 5 sauce bowls and a sugar bowl and creamer. Its in mint condition, no chips, cracks, discolorations or anything. The $50 it was priced at was a steal, but I was able to get it for $40 by my talent for wheeling and dealing...which is just me asking for a better price. Thats whats nice about second hand shops, prices are not set in stone. But I will be enjoying this set for-let's hope- years to come.

Birthday Fun

I had a Forest theme for Maddy's 3rd birthday and made these little coloring books with the idea I borrowed from LovelyDesign. The difference with these are that I monogrammed the books with fun and colorful rub-on letters, instead of printing animals on the covers. Maddy loved them and still colorsa in hers and carries it around with her. As far as a cake, I got some really cute cupcake toppers from BakeItPretty on Etsy. There are a ton of super fun baked goods accessories and more definitely worth checking out! Here is a pic of the result: I photoshopped all the people so we just have the cake, forgive the hasty mess I created! It was fun and Maddy loved it - which is most important.

I really love when I discover a new awesome blog by a parent who has a kid around the same age as mine - they post all these great tutorials for kids rooms and tons of other fun stuff! Newly discovered is Lovelydesign. Look at this superfun wall box display - I must do this!

Maddy's 3rd birthday is coming up and I wanted to make the goody bags for the kids. I like the idea of handmade reusable bags instead of paper or plastic ones that are just no fun. I found a PDF pattern on LovelyDesign's blog to make these monogrammed muslin goody bags. Now thats much more fun! Also, Instead of the bag of candy with small choke on-able toys, I decided to make little coloring books with some directions if found, again, at Lovelydesign's blog. I had to find my own animals and such, but the net helped with all that. I just have to print and make now!WEll, I must go now and get some of this work done.
